KOA Camping

A historic partnership between Airstream and Kampgrounds of America (KOA) will make the iconic silver trailers available for on-site rental at scenic campsites across the U.S.

The relationship with KOA—which has more than 455 locations across North America—will make the latest Airstream models available to the public at a variety of stunning locations. For the first time, people will be able to experience an Airstream without having to buy or tow one. Simply make a reservation, show up and camp with all the convenience, fun, and safety that KOA has to offer.
“KOA is a strong brand with a fantastic reputation,” said Airstream CEO Bob Wheeler. “They offer a huge network of beautifully maintained parks across the country, many of which are situated near major national parks and landmarks. This relationship will benefit everyone, most of all enthusiasts who can now take a vacation at a fantastic KOA campground in a fully equipped Airstream. We hope that many people will enjoy the experience so much that they become hooked, but even if you only rent one once, we promise a premium and totally unique experience.”
To launch the Airstream program, KOA will purchase 25 2009 Flying Cloud models for company-operated campgrounds in Las Vegas, Nevada; Bar Harbor, Maine; and Sugarloaf Key, Florida. In addition, KOA franchisees will have the opportunity to purchase Airstream models for their properties, and both companies expect the network of rental units to expand rapidly in 2009.
“Airstreams have a unique sense of style, a history of quality, and an undeniable timelessness that is really exciting for us,” said Shane Ott, president and chief operating officer of Billings, Montana-based KOA. “Expanding our already substantial accommodations offerings to include Airstreams at certain locations just makes sense. Bringing these two brands together will be very powerful. We are going to introduce a lot of campers to the Airstream experience.”
The Flying Cloud is a new model for 2009 that takes its name from Airstream lore. Featuring a fusion of contemporary design and traditional Airstream style, the handbuilt Flying Cloud features flush-mount wood-grain cabinetry, exposed aluminum interior skin, recessed lighting and oversized windows that maximize interior light and expand the sense of spaciousness. A well-appointed galley easily accommodates pre-dawn poached eggs and toast for two or an after-rock-climb paella and sangria for six. KOA units will feature different flooring and slight structural enhancements to prepare them for high-traffic occupancy, but otherwise will be identical to models sold on dealer lots.
